I’m at my desk and once again the temperature outside is over 30 degrees. It seems ages since it rained. The land outside is parched and there were none of the usual thunderstorms at Wimbledon. So we’re learning to cope with these extremes as each year goes by.

Yesterday Spain won the football World Cup in warm American sunshine and England were left to hope for another opportunity after their semi-final defeat by Argentina. Meanwhile cricket is being played on our village green as another summer creeps towards autumn.

This month the paperback edition of the final novel in my University trilogy has been one of Amazon’s special offers at £0.99 so I hope many of you took advantage of this bargain. Thanks also to the countless readers who have been in touch to say how much they enjoyed this series.

Meanwhile I’m still writing. I find time every day, usually in the quiet of early mornings. I’m mid-way through a new novel in a different genre, the first in a ‘cosy crime’ series. So the writing career that began for me on the day I retired from education goes on into its twentieth year.
