It's 1977 and Jack Sheffield arrives at a small village primary school in North Yorkshire. Little does he imagine what the first year will hold in store, as he has to grapple with, Ruby, the 20 stone caretaker with an acute spelling problem. Vera, the school secretary who worships Margaret Thatcher. Ping, the little Vietnamese refugee who becomes the school’s best reader and poet. Deke Ramsbottom, a singing cowboy, father of Wayne, Shane and Clint; and many others, including a groundsman who grows giant carrots, a barmaid parent who requests sex lessons, and a five-year-old boy whose language is colourful in the extreme. <image:title>My Writing Day</image:title>
<image:caption>Once a school teacher...always a school teacher! I write each weekday with breaks for ‘morning playtime’, lunch and ‘afternoon playtime’. Old habits die hard! Research is vital to my writing so I make regular visits to the British Library in London so I can study extracts from old newspapers. This adds authenticity to the world inhabited by my characters. I also read every day, particularly reference books and magazines that provide useful background to my stories. Part of the fun of being a full-time writer is that I get to meet interesting people from all walks of life. More often than not, this takes place over a relaxing meal and, while I make notes about dentists, farmers, gardeners and ex-Presidents of the Women’s Institute, they enjoy a glass of wine! So my ‘writing day’ is never dull.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Jack - Jack Sheffield was born in 1945 and grew up in the tough environment of Gipton Estate in north-east Leeds. His first job was ‘pitch boy’, carrying buckets of boiling bitumen up a ladder to repair roofs. From an early age he always loved to read and write. His mother taught him to read using his school reading book, a Beacon Reader about a farm with an assortment of animals. On Christmas morning 1953, Jack finally owned his first book, Five Go off to Camp by Enid Blyton. It was second hand and cost six old pence. He read it every night under the sheets by the light of his 3-colour torch and life seemed complete. Only in later years did he realise how difficult it must have been for his mother to afford that book.</image:title>

In the early 70s, he was a teacher in Keighley in West Yorkshire, during which time he earned a reputation as a hard-tackling wing-forward for Wharfedale RUFC.</image:title>

<image:title>About Jack - In the late 70s and 80s, Jack was head teacher of two schools in North Yorkshire. It was during this time, that he began writing short stories about the humorous, and occasionally sad times in his working life. In 1980 he wrote the short stories ‘The Carrot Champion’ and ‘Dance With Your Eyes’ and these appear as chapters in Teacher Teacher! Jack also become Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at Bretton Hall College of the University of Leeds. It was then he began to record his many amusing stories of village life, which now feature in the best selling Teacher series.</image:title>

<image:title>About Jack - However, it wasn’t until Jack retired that he began writing full-time! In 2005, Jack attended the Winchester Writers’ Conference and gave a copy of his novel to a London Literary Agent, Philip Patterson of Marjacq Scripts. Jack’s best Christmas present of 2005 was a telephone call from Philip saying he had enjoyed his book and was prepared to be his Literary Agent. In 2006, Philip secured a contract for Jack with Transworld Publishers. Since then, Jack has continued to grow his bestselling series of books and in 2017, was awarded the honorary title of Cultural Fellow of York St John University.</image:title>

It's 1952 and Lily Briggs has just arrived in Ragley, ready to begin her first school year as a teacher at the village school. There to welcome her is John Pruett who, after his years in the war, has settled into the role of headmaster. Tom Feather, the local bobby, is also on hand to make her feel at home up north. But Lily has a secret lurking in her past that threatens the new life she's trying to build. Can she move forward and begin to love again? Only time will tell. In his eleventh novel, Jack Sheffield invites you to travel back in time. Back to the days when owning a television made you the envy of the neighbours, Woolworth's still had pride of place on the high street and the village panto was the height of entertainment. <image:caption>Order now on: Amazon or Waterstones It’s 1969 and Jack Sheffield is a young teacher in need of a job. In a room full of 29 other newly qualified teachers, he’s overjoyed when he’s appointed to Heather View Primary. Located on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, he’s excited to start the year and begin shaping young minds in a new location. But Heather View isn’t as idyllic as it first sounds. In fact, it looks more like a prison than a primary school. With less than adequate funding and a headteacher who doesn't seem to care, it’s no easy task to give the children the education they deserve. But Jack’s determined to do just that. Full of warmth and good humour, Back to School is like taking a nostalgic walk through the past to a simpler time.</image:caption>
